Swedish singer and multi-instrumentalist Amanda Mair's gorgeously airy
melodies reveal an artist wise beyond her years. Raised on an island
outside of Stockholm, Mair started singing at age four, soon picking up
various instruments and by grade six drumming in a Hellacopters cover
band, with things really clicking into place when she backed her singing
with piano. Not long after, Mair began performing at nightclubs and in
2010 at age 15 recorded some covers in a local studio, making such an
impression on the studio owner that he shared the results with Club 8
singer/multi-instrumentalist and Labrador label boss Johan Angergård,
who then signed her. The following summer, Mair's debut single, "House,"
arrived, compelling The Washington Post to compare her to Kate Bush.
Mair followed up in October with the single "Doubt" as she began working
on her full-length debut with Philip Ekström (the Mary Onettes), and
closed 2011 with Big Breakthrough honors from the Swedish Music
Industry. Her self-titled record arrived in Sweden in 2012 (followed in
the U.S. that June), earning comparisons to Lykke Li meets Rumours and
being praised as one of the best Swedish debuts of all time by
Aftonbladet (the country's largest daily paper). | |
